Summer Fun Physical Therapy
Summer is the perfect time to get outside and move your body with summer exercise—but exercising in the heat can also bring unique challenges. The weather is great in Fairfax, Loudoun, Chantilly, Centreville, South Riding, and Virginia.
Here at Orthocare Physical Therapy Center, our physical therapy experts want to help you stay safe, active, and injury-free all season long. Here are five essential summer exercise tips to keep you healthy and energized.
Hydrate Before, During, and After Exercise
Summer heat increases your risk of dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before and after any physical activity. Try to drink 8 fl oz. (~ 250 ml) of fluid every 15-30 minutes of outside time. If you are outside for less than an hour, water is fine. You can also add electrolytes if you’re sweating heavily or working out for more than an hour. However, if you really do want a sports drink, mix half water and half sports drink to cut down on the sugar while still replenishing electrolytes.
Avoid Exercise Peak Heat Hours
Plan your workouts for early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Midday sun can increase the risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, especially during high-intensity workouts. Protect yourself against the sun. Use sunscreen with high SPF numbers before and during exercise. Avoid exercising during hottest parts of the day. If possible, avoid outdoor time between 11 am – 3 pm.
Wear Breathable Clothing and Sunscreen
Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool and dry. Always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin, even on cloudy days.
Listen to Your Body
Summer workouts can be more taxing on your body. If you feel dizzy, overly fatigued, or nauseous, stop immediately and rest in a cool, shaded area.
Try Low-Impact Outdoor Activities
Swimming, walking, kayaking, or cycling are excellent ways to stay active without putting too much strain on your joints. These low-impact exercises are also great for injury prevention.
If you are cramping or feeling dizzy, lightheaded and have a weak pulse, stop exercise, get away from heat and cool down.
